- Summary
- This is the first comprehensive exploration of the artists and studios who created and developed animation in its early years from 1900 to 1920. It is divided into two parts. Part 1, Origins: This segment examines the roots of animation in the optical toys, comic strips and vaudeville shows of the 19th century. It features the very first animated cartoon as well as the work of such pioneers as J. Stuart Blackston, Winsor McCay, John Randolph Bray, Raoul Barré, Earl Hurd and the surprising contribution of William Randolph Hearst. Part 2, Rising stars: This part discovers the rare early work of artists who would later become famous in the 1920's, 30's and 40's It includes the first stop-motion film developed by Willis O'Brien (who would later go on to create King Kong in 1933), the first Felix the Cat cartoon and Walt Disney's cartoon ("Newman laugh-o-gram"), as well as early animated work by Paul Terry ("Mighty Mouse," "Heckle and Jeckle") and Max Fleischer ("Betty Boop," "Popeye," and "Superman"). Each of the thirteen cartoons in the program is accompanied by original instrumental music of the period, jazz and ragtime. Narration provides a short introduction to each cartoon and explains developments such as rotoscoping, moving backgrounds and the use of celluloid sheets. The narration is supplemented by cartoons in freeze-frame and slow motion as well as production stills and portraits of the artists.
