Summary
Bob Santelli discusses the scope of the interview, as well as the nature of oral history interviews and the role of special archives. McCoy Tyner speaks with Bob Santelli about growing up in West Philadelphia, Penn., and the musicians he encountered there; playing in jazz bands at his mother's hair salon; playing with John Coltrane, and his impressions of Coltrane; his impressions of Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk; touring as a teenager with John Coltrane's band; his impressions of Elvin Jones; his impressions of Ornette Coleman; the point in his career, in 1966, when he decided to leave Coltrane's band; releasing his first record, The real McCoy; his role as a band leader, and his relationship with band members; his newest recording, Guitars; Coltrane's musical style and the way he worked with fellow musicians; collaborations with Joe Henderson.
