Summary
Special events mark the 1000th performance of George Balanchine's The nutcracker. At the beginning of disc 2, preceding Act II, Mayor Edward I. Koch speaks in the honor of the occasion, noting Balanchine's connections to New York City, and reads a proclamation; Lincoln Kirstein also speaks briefly. This performance was also Peter Martins's farewell performance with the company; during curtain calls Martins is honored by Jerome Robbins and others.
