Summary
Emanuel Vardi, a violist in the NBC symphony who played many years under Toscanini and who later became a conductor himself, shares his memories of those years and discusses the combination of human quality of the maestro with that of a true leader, or as he puts it, "dictator" (but in a positive way) which enabled Toscanini to achieve the perfection he was always striving for. He says that the influence of Toscanini on him can not be compared to any other conductors' for whom he played during his career.
