Summary
Virginia and Alfred Wallenstein, friends and colleagues of Toscanini, call him the biggest influence in their lives. They first saw him in concert in Italy, and two years later Alfred auditioned for him. From that first audition he knew that it would be the greatest music in his life never to be encountered again and that every day he spent with him was a revelation. Starting as a cellist who played in the NBC orchestra, Alfred, with the encouragement from the maestro, became a conductor himself. He says that as an interpreter of music, Toscanini had intensity as no one else before. He talks about maestro's "supreme control of the orchestra, knowledge of the style, complete understanding of the composers he liked and passion to realize all that."
