Summary
Michel Piastro, violinist and conductor, was concertmaster for Toscanini for eleven years at the Philharmonic. He was a witness to many rehearsals that in his opinion reveal the real greatness of maestro: he would come to them totally prepared and expected nothing less from his musicians. If his expectations were not met, the famous "storms" would occur, but they never lasted long, never became lectures and were always directed at a concrete musician or musicians. Piastro also recalls the emphasis maestro put on tempi and his ability to interpret the composers' intentions. But the most remarkable quality he attributes to Toscanini was that of an almost "hypnotic power" to see all the eyes of the musicians at the same time and keep them alert.
