Description
1 videodisc (38 min.) : sd., b&w; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
For ten years, Jessen followed the Ballet Russe around America filming Gaîté Parisienne, whenever Danilova, Franklin, and Danielian were dancing the principal roles. He edited this film from thirty-second "takes" filmed in various locations in many different theatres. This disc includes the complete edited film, with optional commentary by Frederic Franklin; a documentary about the life and dance films of Victor Jessen; and an interview with Frederic Franklin in which he discusses the origins and creation of the ballet; his own performances of various roles; initial reactions to the ballet and its popularity in America; Danilova's performance as the glove-seller; the version of the ballet filmed at Warner Brothers in Hollywood; his role in re-staging the ballet, and the difficulty of retaining the original style with dancers of later generations; and reminiscences of Léonide Massine.
