  2. Original edition published under title Das Narren Schyff (Basel : Johann Bergmann, de Olpe, 11 February 1494).
  3. The present edition is a reprint of the edition published by Johann Grüninger in Strasbourg under title Das nüv schiff vo[n] Narragonia (between 11 February 1494 and 23 May 1495), sometimes referenced as Das neue Narrenschiff. It was reprinted twice by Grüninger (1496, 1497) and once by Schönsperger (1498). This is an unauthorized version, containing interpolations and alterations affecting text, and in Grüninger's editions also details of some illustrations; alterations to the text are often substantial, although limited to chapters 1-49 and 109-112. Brant protested against the alterations to his text. See Catalogue of books printed in the XVth century now in the British Museum, v. 2, page 372; Sébastien Brant, 500e anniversaire de La nef des folz, c1494, page 191 (entry 91).

  6. Illustrations: 120 woodcuts (including many repeats), comprising 1 large title page cut (repeated on verso and on sig. i2b) copied from Grüninger's first Strasbourg edition (see Schramm, A. Bilderschmuck der Frühdrucke, v. 20, plate 32, figure 168), a two-part cut (carriage and ship) with side borders, and 116 small cuts (including repeats) previously used in Schönsperger's 1494 edition (Schreiber 3558), which were close copies of cuts in Peter Wagner's Nuremberg, 1494 edition (Schreiber 3556), the latter being reduced and reversed copies of cuts in the original Basel edition. See Schreiber (cited below). 73 of the designs in the original Basel edition have been attributed to Albrecht Dürer. See: Albrecht Dürer : das druckgraphische Werk / bearbeitet von Rainer Schoch, Matthias Mende und Anna Scherbaum, c2001-c2004, v. 3, pages 86-87 and entries 266.1-266.73. Others are attributed to the Master of the Haintz-Narr, so called after the lettering in one of the prints.
