Note
  • "Le citoyen L.B." is Lucien Bonaparte, prince de Canino. Cf. Barbier, A.A. Ouvrages anonymes, IV, col. 826; Martin.
  • "An VII" in the French Revolutionary calendar = September 22, 1798-September 21, 1799. La tribu indienne was reviewed in Mercure de France, 10 prairial, an 7 = May 29, 1799, pages 18-32.
  • An 1822 edition (Paris : Chaumerot ainé) has title Les Ténadares, ou, l'Européen et l'Indienne, and is falsely attributed to "Mistriss Helm, auteur de La caverne de Sainte Marguerite," i.e. Elizabeth Helme. Cf. Martin.
  • For discussion of publication history, cf. introd. by Cecilia A. Feilla to the ed. published by the Modern Humanities Research Association, London, 2006. "L'auteur ne l'avait fait tirer qu'en petit nombre ... Devenu ministre de l'Intérieur sous le Consulat, Lucien veut effacer cette œuvre de sa jeunesse: il rachète et détruit tous les exemplaires disponibles. Seuls trois exemplaires de cette première édition nous sont parvenus"--Feilla, p. 2. There are now known to be at least 7 extant copies. Feilla's ed. is based on the Spencer Coll. copy.
  • Signatures: v. 1: pi² A-P⁶ Q⁴(-Q4); v. 2: pi² A-S⁶ T⁴.
  • Spencer Coll. copy is extra-illustrated with 5 engravings by Barthélémy Roger (4) and Jean Godefroy (1) after Pierre-Paul Prud'hon, which are cataloged separately. The ill. are not known to have been published with the book and were perhaps created for an unrealized deluxe edition; cf. Clément, C. Prud'hon (Paris, 1872), p. 247. Of the 7 known extant copies, only Spencer Coll. copy and Bibliothèque nationale de France's 2nd copy (RES P-Y2-3234) contain them; they are also known to have been present in the Franchetti/Hoe/Descamps-Scrive/Schiff/Meus copy, present whereabouts unknown.
  • Errata: v. 1, p. [185]; v. 2, p. [224].
