Tana de Gamez, host of the radio program, Latin American World, on WBAI, New York, speaks in general terms about the political state of Latin America before turning to the subjects of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba and Alicia Alonso; Alonso's successful career in the United States before moving back to Cuba; her recent performance in Alberto Alonso's Carmen; the various literary and musical sources of Carmen; Alberto Alonso's Carmen, including Alicia Alonso's performance; her partners, including Azarii Plisetskii; Arnold Haskell's comments about Alicia Alonso; Alonso's life and reputation in Cuba today; the political aspects of Alonso's career, primarily the fact that she is barred by the United States government from performing in the United States; the manner in which she is both written about and ignored by United States dance reviewers including Don McDonagh and Clive Barnes, and her patriotism.
