Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor Martin Sheen. Born Ramón Gerardo Antonio Estévez, Sheen discusses his childhood in Dayton, Ohio in a large Roman Catholic household headed by his Irish-born mother and Spanish-born father; his dislike of school and early ambition to be an actor; the death of his mother just before his eleventh birthday; coming to New York following his appearance on the television program The rising generation, where he met CBS casting director, Robert Dale Martin; adopting his screen name Martin Sheen; getting involved with the experimental theatre group The Living Theatre; his four children; his Catholicism; and his political activism. Sheen discusses his work with director Terence Malick in the 1973 motion picture Badlands; his role in the made-for-television movie The execution of Private Slovik (1974); and his role as Captain Benjamin Willard in the 1979 film Apocalypse now, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Sheen describes the shooting of his harrowing scene in a sleazy Saigon hotel room, and the heart attack he suffered during the making of the film. He speaks about his struggles with alcoholism during that period, and his recovery from addiction. Sheen also discusses his series of politcal portrayals in such works as the television movie The missles of October (1974), the television miniseries Kennedy (1983), and as President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet in the television program The west wing, in which he co-stars with Stockard Channing. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of these works. A brief question and answer session with Sheen and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
