Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor Jeremy Irons. Irons speaks of his childhood and upbringing in Cowes, Isle of Wight; his education at the Little Appley School, and the Sherborne School in Dorset, where he achieved local fame as a member of the four-man band The Four Pillars of Wisdom; training as an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School; landing the role of Judas in the 1971-73 London production of Godspell; meeting his wife Sinéad Cusack; performing in the 1978 Globe Theatre production of Simon Gray's play The rear column, directed by Harold Pinter; and his role as Charles Ryder in the 1981 television mini-series Brideshead revisted. Irons discusses his first film starring role in The French lieutenant's woman (1981), playing opposite Meryl Streep; and his roles in such motion pictures as Dead ringers (1988), Reversal of fortune (1990), Waterland (1992), in which he starred with his wife, The lion king (1994), for which he supplied the voice of Scar, Lolita (1997) and Callas forever (2002). Irons speaks about rehearsals for the 2003 New York City Opera revival of Stephen Sondheim's A little night music; and lastly, performs a song. A brief question and answer session with Irons and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
