Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor Stockard Channing. Channing discusses her parents, and her upbringing in Manhattan's Upper East Side; her education at private schools and at Radcliffe College; beginning her stage acting career; moving back to New York City following college, where she made her Broadway debut in the New York Shakespeare Festival's musical version of Two gentlemen of Verona (1971). Channing examines her roles in the television movie A girl most likely to (1973), the motion pictures The fortune (1975) and Grease (1978), the 1990 play Six degrees of separation by John Guare, and its 1993 movie version, the 1994 Off-Broadway production of Tom Stoppard's drama Hapgood, the 1995 motion pictures Smoke and To Wong Foo thanks for everything, the television movie The baby dance (1998), and the 2001 motion picture The business of strangers. She discusses her role as the presidential spouse Abbey Bartlet in the popular television series The west wing, and also examines her working process as an actor. A brief question and answer session with Channing and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
