- Summary
- The Judith Mara Gutman papers, 1949-1999, document the career and personal life of the social historian and author. The collection includes personal and professional correspondence; typescript drafts of published and unpublished articles and books; and research files, mainly concerning her 1982 book and exhibition on Indian photography, Through Indian Eyes, and her biography of Lewis W. Hine. Also present are lecture and course notes, files regarding the estate of her husband Herbert George Gutman, and sound recordings of her lectures and panel appearances. There is a small number of photographs relating to her activities. Professional correspondence in alphabetical order includes letters to and from artists, academics, publishers and research institutions associated with Gutman's work and travel, notably Ansel Adams, John Kenneth Galbraith, Irving Kristol, Ashvin Mehta, Beaumont Newhall and Kathryn Kish Sklar. Personal correspondence with family and friends, in chronological order, reflect family life, travels and professional activities.

- Biography (note)
- Judith Mara Gutman is a New York-based author and specialist in the field of the social history of photography. She was born in New York City in 1928 to Victor and Anna Markowitz and married historian Herbert George Gutman (1828-1985) in 1950. Judith Gutman has taught at several universities, and has lectured and written as an independent scholar on topics exploring imagery and society. Her publications include works on American social history, the history of photography in India, and a biography of Lewis W. Hine.
