Summary
The papers include research notes and drafts of Mura Dehn's scholarly writings on the development of Afro-American social dance, documentation of her professional life as choreographer, dancer and filmmaker, and of her personal life in correspondence, notebooks and poetry.
The first series is divided into articles directly related to Dehn's unpublished manuscript The spirit moves (held in the Dance Collection), and other writings on Afro-American dance arranged in historic chronological order. Also documented is Mura Dehn's personal and professional relationship with James Berry.
Series II and III contain personal writings including poetry and notebooks combining various types of writing.
Correspondence in Series IV includes letters documenting the acclaim given to her film The spirit moves, and many letters from her brother, Boris Tsiperovich. Family papers in Series V include documents relating to her father David Tsiperovich in Russia.
Remaining series include scenarios for dances, proposals for a film on Israeli dancing, an article by Roger Pryor Dodge, lecture notes, promotional material, artwork, clippings, programs, photographs, and three audiotapes.
