Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor Kathy Bates. Bates speaks about her upbringing in Memphis, Tenn., the daughter of older parents; her childhood forays into acting; attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where she studied drama under Dr. Bernard Hopgood; moving to New York to pursue a career as an actor; her first significant role in the 1975 Off-Broadway play Vanities; her role in the original production of Beth Henley's Crimes of the heart in Louisville, KY, which moved to Off-Broadway in 1981; her experiences performing in her acclaimed role as a suicidal daughter in the 1983 Broadway play 'Night, mother by Marsha Norman; and her role in the 1987 Off-Broadway play Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. Bates also discusses also her roles in such motion pictures as Misery (1990), directed by Rob Reiner, Fried green tomatoes (1991), Dolores Claiborne (1995), Titanic (1997), and Primary colors (1998). Bates expounds on her approach to acting; choosing a role; what she seeks from a director; and her concerns about the current level of standards of her craft. A brief question and answer session with Bates and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
