Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (50 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor Danny Glover. Glover speaks of his childhood in San Francisco, Calif., the son of parents who were active supporters of the NAACP; attending San Francisco State University, where he became involved in black political activism; enrolling in the training program at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, where he learned classical dramatic technique, and was strongly influenced by the technique espoused by Uta Hagen; his decision to pursue a career as an actor, and being cast by Athol Fugard in his 1982 Broadway play Master Harold...and the boys. Glover examines his roles as Moze in the motion picture Places in the heart (1984); as Mister in the 1985 film The color purple; as Sargeant Rogert Murtaugh, in the immensely popular Lethal weapon (1987), in which he played opposite Mel Gibson; his role as Harry in the 1990 film To sleep with anger, which he also produced; as Simon in the 1991 film Grand Canyon, in which he worked with actor Kevin Kline and director Lawrence Kasdan; and his role as a homeless man in the 1993 film The saint of Fort Washington, playing opposite Matt Dillon. Glover also speaks about his feelings for his mother; the actors who have influenced him; the "racial factor" in motion picture casting; his approach to acting, and how he constructs a character; and his volunteer activities on behalf of literacy and other causes. A brief question and answer session with Glover and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
