Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with comedian, actor, singer, writer and producer Martin Short. Short discusses his family and his upbringing in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; his involvement with comedy as a child; coping at an early age with the death of his elder brother, mother, and father; his education at McMaster University, and getting involved with theater during his last year there; his comedic influences; joining the Toronto based improvisation group The Second City, and then the cast of television program SCTV (Second city television), and the development of many of his well-known comic characters, including Ed Grimley, Brock Linehan and Irving Cohen, which he later reprised on the television program Saturday night live. Short performs short bits from several of his routines. Short also speaks about whether comedy can be taught; his approach to creating his characters; his motion picture roles in such films as Innerspace (1987), and the 1991 remake of Father of the bride; and his experience working with several theater notables in the 1993 Broadway production of The goodbye girl. A brief question and answer session with Short and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
