Summary
James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion and song with actress, singer and star of the musical theater Bernadette Peters. Peters discusses her upbringing in an Italian-American family in Queens, New York, and her career as a child performer which began when her mother put her on the television show Juvenile jury at age 3 and a half; changing her name from Lazzara to Peters; her vocal, dramatic and dance training; attending the Quintano School for Young Professionals as a teenager; her early performance as "Ruby" in the 1968 off-Broadway Dames at sea; her roles in the motion pictures The jerk (1979) and Pennies from heaven (1981), in which she starred with Steve Martin; her work with composer Stephen Sondheim in the Broadway productions Sunday in the park with George (1984) and Into the woods (1987); her role in the 1985 musical Song and dance by Andrew Lloyd Webber; and her concert performances. Peters examines her personal development via her work in the musical theater; the music of Sondheim; and her approach to musical theater singing. A brief question and answer session with Peters, and the Actors Studio master's degree students, which includes her performance of a song, concludes the program.
