Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film and stage performer Glenn Close. Close discusses her upbringing in Greenwich, Conn., the daughter of a doctor; attending the private boarding school Choate Rosemary Hall and then William and Mary College in Virginia, where she majored in drama; and her early work acting in plays following successful auditions with two national theatre organizations. Close also examines her roles in such films as The world according to Garp (1982), The big chill (1983), The natural (1984), and Dangerous liaisons (1988). She speaks about her Broadway roles in such plays at The real thing (1984) by Tom Stoppard, Death and the maiden (1992) by Ariel Dorfman, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, in which she played fictional silent screen actress Norman Desmond. Close discusses her approach to acting; her criteria for selecting a film role; her preparation for a motion picture take; and what she seeks in a director. A brief question and answer session with Close and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
