Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (60 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film and stage actor Matthew Broderick. Broderick discusses his upbringing in New York City, the son of Patricia Broderick and actor Jimmy Broderick; performing in high school plays, and his decision to study drama; his training at H. B. Studio with Uta Hagen; getting his first major role in the off-Broadway production of Harvey Fierstein's Torch song trilogy (1982), followed by the role of Eugene Morris Jerome in two Neil Simon plays: Brighton Beach memoirs (1983) and Biloxi Blues (1985). Broderick also discusses his first film role in Max Dugan returns (1983) with Jason Robards, and later roles: Ladyhawke (1985), with Michelle Pfeiffer; Ferris Bueller's day off (1986); Biloxi Blues (1988); Family business (1989); and The freshman (1990). The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of these works. Broderick discusses his leading role in the 1995 Broadway revival of the musical How to succeed in business without really trying. He elaborates on his approach to comic acting versus straight dramatic acting; his experience with stage fright; and how he keeps his performances fresh when appearing in a play. A brief question and answer session with Broderick and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
