- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor and comedian Mary Tyler Moore. Moore talks of her childhood; her early studies and career as a dancer; landing her first major television role as Laura Petrie, on The Dick Van Dyke show (1961-1966); her role as Mary Richards, a 30-something single woman news producer, on the sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore show (1970-1977); her 1980 film Ordinary people, in which she played an emotionally barren mother living in the aftermath of the accidental death of her oldest son; her role in the 1980 Broadway production of the play Whose life is it anyway?, about a quadripilegic who is determined to be allowed to die; and her views on the craft of comedy. Moore relates her discussion to her private life, including her recovery from alcoholism, her diabetes, and the family tragedies which have befallen her. The program concludes with questions from students at the Actors Studio.
