- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with theatre, film and television actor/director Lee Grant. Grant speaks of her upbringing in New York City and her childhood involvement in the performing arts; her drama studies with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse; her breakthrough role as a shoplifter in the stage play Detective story, which she repeated in the movie version; being blacklisted by the Hollywood movie studio bosses in the 1950s, during which time she began teaching drama and became politically active in the actors' labor union, Actors' Equity, and worked on stage and in television; and her role on the T.V. serial Peyton Place. Grant speaks about her return to motion pictures in such films as In the heat of the night in 1967, starring Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier; the 1970 film The landlord, in which she plays a matronly W.A.S.P. who becomes involved with blacks living in a ghetto section of Brooklyn; Shampoo (1975), in which she stars with Warren Beatty; and in the 1976 film Voyage of the damned, about an ill-fated ship of Jewish German passengers attempting to flee the Nazis in the 1930s. Grant also speaks about the technique of acting comedy, and her work as a director of motion pictures. A brief question and answer session with Grant and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
