Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor, director, producer and writer Christopher Reeve. Reeve expounds on his upbringing in Princeton, New Jersey, where he first began acting while attending the Princeton Country Day School, and at the local McCarter Theatre; his early love of the piano; attending Cornell University and then The Juilliard School, where he studied acting under John Houseman; appearing on television soap operas; working with legendary actress Katharine Hepburn in the 1975 Broadway production A matter of gravity; and landing the part of Superman/Clark Kent in the 1978 motion picture Superman. Reeve elaborates on how he developed his Superman character, which he also assumed for the film's three sequels, and on the challenges of the part. He speaks about his role in the 1980 Broadway production The Fifth of July, in which he portrayed a disabled Vietnam veteran; playing a psychopath opposite Michael Caine in Sidney Lumet's 1982 motion picture Deathtrap; his speech at the1996 Democratic National Convention, in which he advocated for increased government research on disability; his role as Basil Ransome in the 1984 motion picture The Bostonians, in which he starred with Vanessa Redgrave; his role as Edgar Anscombe in the 1985 motion picture The aviator, for which Reeve, a pilot, did all the flying stunts; and his favorite role, as Jack Lewis in the 1993 film The remains of the day. Reeve also speaks about his direction of the 1997 made-for-television movie In the gloaming.
