Description

Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with Nathan Lane, actor of the stage and screen. Lane speaks about his upbringing in Jersey City, New Jersey, in an Irish American home, and his father, a truck driver and aspiring tenor, who died when Lane was eleven. Lane discusses his childhood difficulties, for which he compensated with his humor; leaving college to seek work as an actor; his admiration for comic duo Laurel & Hardy and performer Jackie Gleason; his relationship with playwright Terrence McNally, in whose Off-Broadway play, The Lisbon Traviata, he performed his first major role for the stage; his first major Broadway role as Nathan Detroit in the 1992 revival of Guys and Dolls; and his role as Max Prince, a character based on entertainer Sid Caesar, in the Neil Simon play Laughter on the 23rd floor. Lane also examines the origins of his gift for comedy and how it has developed. He speaks about his role as Timon in the 1994 Disney animated film The lion king; his performance in the 1994 Manhattan Theater Club production of McNally's play Love! Valour! Compassion!; his work with director Mike Nichols and actor Robin Williams in the 1996 film The birdcage, in which he played Albert, a drag queen; and lastly, his role as Pseudolus in the 1996 Broadway revival of A funny thing happened on the way to the forum, for which he won a Tony Award. The discussion is illustrated with film clips from these works. A brief question and answer session with Lane and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
