Laura Foreman speaks with host Lee Edward Stern about the dance department at the New School for Social Research, including its relation to Choreographers Theater, the programs of studies offered, and Foreman's role in founding the department; the ChoreoConcerts [and critiques series] presented annually at the New School, including the criteria for selecting choreographers; the focus on presenting premieres; the New York State Council on the Arts as a funding source; the wide range of sound environments used; the lecture-demonstrations that follow the performances; the audiences, in particular the kinds of questions asked following the lecture-demonstrations; her own choreography; her thoughts on dance critics; her use of music by John Watts; her use of a macaw in Song and dance [one part of a three-part work]; working with the dancers in her company; the two major trends in modern dance today.
