Description

Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with Academy Award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss. Dreyfuss speaks about his parents and family life, attending Beverly Hills High School, an important childhood drama teacher, and his early success as an actor who, following his studies and performances at the Gallery Theatre in Anaheim, California, appeared in a variety of popular television programs. Dreyfuss discusses his career as a film actor, beginning with his role in George Lucas' motion picture American graffiti, and discusses his major roles in such films as The apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Jaws, Close encounters of the third kind, The goodbye girl, in which he played Elliot, a character whom he very much admired, Down and out in Beverly Hills, Moon over Parador, and Mr. Holland's opus, in which his character ages 30 years. Dreyfuss speaks about his close association with filmmaker Steven Spielberg, his view of acting as the "fulfillment of fantasy," and his struggles with substance abuse during the 1970s and 80s. The discussion is illustrated with clips from The goodbye girl, Moon over Parador, and Mr. Holland's opus. A brief question and answer session with Dreyfuss and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
