Description

Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with stage, television and film actor, director and screenwriter Alan Alda. Alda speaks about his upbringing as the son of Broadway and film star, Robert Alda, whose earlier burlesque performances Alda watched as a child; contracting Polio at the age of 7, from which he recovered due to the efforts of his mother and a treatment method developed by Sister Elizabeth Kenny; attending Fordham University in New York, N.Y., and spending his junior year abroad, during which he acted in plays; enlisting in the Army; dating his soon-to-be wife Arlene Weiss; developing his acting skills as a member of the improvisational comedy troupe Second City; his work on the Broadway stage in such plays as Purlie Victorious and The owl and the pussycat; and his roles in such motion pictures as Paper lion and The glass house. Alda discusses his role as Hawkeye Pierce in popular, long-running television series M*A*S*H, elaborating on its production, his favorite episodes, his character, and the decision to end the series. Alda speaks also about his writing and directing of the motion picture The four seasons, and working with director Woody Allen on the motion picture Crimes and misdemeanors, in which Alda played a pompous television producer. The discussion is illustrated with clips from these two films, and from M*A*S*H. A brief question and answer session with Alda and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
