Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with Academy Award winning actor Jessica Lange. Lange describes her upbringing in northern Minnesota and her relationship with her father; her travels with her then-husband Paco Grande in Europe and elsewhere; and her studies in mime in Paris with Etienne Decroux. Lange discusses her acting studies with drama teacher Sandra Seacat and the development of her film career, beginning with her role as Dwan in the 1976 remake of the motion picture King Kong. She discusses her roles in the motion pictures All that jazz, directed by Bob Fosse; The postman always rings twice, in which she starred with Jack Nicholson; Frances, in which she played emotionally troubled actress Frances Farmer; Tootsie, in which she starred with Dustin Hoffman; Country, in which she appeared with her real-life partner Sam Shepard; Sweet dreams, in which she played country music star Patsy Cline; Cape Fear, playing opposite Robert De Niro; Blue Sky, for which she won an Oscar; and Rob Roy. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of these works. Lange speaks of her Broadway debut in Tennessee Williams' A streetcar named Desire, in which she played the part of Blanche DuBois, and speaks also about how she chooses her projects, the kinds of characters to which she is attracted, and her approach to acting, including her technique of perceiving her characters in musical terms. A brief question and answer session with Lange and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
