- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actor, film director, and director of the Actors Studio Paul Newman. Newman speaks of his involvement with the Actors Studio following his studies at Yale Drama School; his view of himself as an actor; the kinds of characters he likes to play; rehearsing and preparing for his motion picture roles; his acting in his early motion picture Hud, in comparison with his later film The verdict; and his first stage role in the 1953 Broadway play Picnic, directed by Joshua Logan. Newman analyzes his motion picture roles as Rocky Graziano in Somebody up there likes me, directed by Martin Ritt; as Ben Quick in The long hot summer, in which he starred with Orson Welles; as Billy The Kid in The left handed gun; and as Butch Cassidy in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which he played opposite Robert Redford. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of the works mentioned. A brief question and answer session with Newman and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
