Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (61 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with actress Ellen Burstyn. Burstyn discusses working as a model in her hometown of Detroit, Mich.; moving to New York City, where she modelled, danced in nightclubs, did television commercials, and appeared as a dancer on the Jackie Gleason show from 1956-57. Burstyn elaborates on her experience working with Gleason; her use of a variety of stage names during her career; her Broadway debut in the play Fair game; her drama studies with Lee Strasberg in New York City in the 1960s, following her decision to leave Hollywood, where she was acting in motion pictures. Burstyn discusses her later, major motion picture roles, including Beth in Alex in Wonderland (1970), directed by Paul Mazursky; Lois Farrow in The last picture show (1971), directed by Peter Bogdanovich; Sally in The king of Marvin Gardens (1972), one of her all-time favorite parts; her most difficult role as Chris MacNeil in The exorcist (1973); and Doris, which she originated on Broadway, in Same time next year (1978). Burstyn speaks at length about her work on the 1975 film Alice doesn't live here anymore; and the 1980 motion picture Resurrection, on which she worked with the legendary stage actress Eva Le Gallienne. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of these works. A brief question and answer session with Burstyn and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
