- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film and television actor Peter Falk. Falk speaks about his family and his childhood in Ossining, New York; losing his eye at the age of three; excelling as a student in high school; joining the Merchant Marines; completing a bachelor's degree in political science at The New School for Social Research in New York and a master's degree in public administration at Syracuse University; and deciding to become an actor following a pivotal course in Shakespearean drama with Eva Le Gallienne. Falk elaborates at length on his portrayal of Lt. Columbo, the shabby and ostensibly absent minded detective of the popular television series Columbo, and the discussion is illustrated with clips from the show. He speaks also about his work in such motion pictures as Murder, Inc., Pocketful of miracles, Husbands, directed by John Cassavetes, A woman under the influence, in which he played opposite Gena Rowlands, The in-laws, Happy New Year, Tune in tomorrow, and Roommates. The discussion is illustrated with clips from the last five of these works. Falk's performance in the Broadway play The prisoner of Second Avenue is also discussed briefly. A question and answer session with Falk and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
