- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film, stage and television actor Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins discusses his childhood in Wales; his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he was influenced by the acting technique advanced by Constantin Stanislavsky; his work as a stage actor at the Royal National Theatre under the direction of Sir Laurence Olivier; landing the motion picture role of Richard I in The lion in winter, opposite Katharine Hepburn; his decision to leave the National Theatre; and his involvement with the Actors Studio in New York. Hopkins examines his portrayal of the cannabalistic serial killer Hannibal Lechter in the motion picture The silence of the lambs, in which he played opposite Jodie Foster, and his various other film roles, including Henry Jay Wilcox in Howard's End; the butler James Stevens in Remains of the day; and as President Richard Milhous Nixon in Nixon, directed by Oliver Stone. The discussion is illustrated with clips from The silence of the lambs, Howards End, and Remains of the day. A brief question and answer session with Hopkins and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
