Summary
  1. James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film actor, director and producer Robert De Niro. De Niro discusses his childhood and upbringing in Greenwich Village as the son of painters Robert De Niro, Sr. and Virginia Admiral; his drama studies as a youth at the Dramatic Workshop and with Stella Adler, whose technique had a strong influence on him; and his involvement with the Actors Studio, where he met and worked with actor Shelley Winters. De Niro speaks also about his career in motion pictures, including his enduring collaboration with director Martin Scorsese. He analyzes his film roles as baseball player Bruce Pearson in Bang the drum slowly; as young Vito Corleone in The Godfather part II; as Travis Bickle in Taxi driver; as the boxer Jake Lamotta in Raging bull. He also discusses his work in such movies as Goodfellas and Cape Fear. The discussion is illustrated with clips from Taxi driver, Raging bull, and Cape fear. De Niro also speaks about his direction and production of the film A Bronx tale. A brief question and answer session with De Niro and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
