- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film director, writer, producer and cabaret entertainer/comedian Mike Nichols. Nichols, who was born in Berlin, Germany, speaks about moving with his German-Russian Jewish family to the United States to flee the Nazis in 1939, and his feelings about his escape from the Holocaust. He speaks about meeting Elaine May, with whom he formed the successful comedy team Nichols and May, and his seminal influences: drama teacher Lee Strasberg and director Elia Kazan; the formation of the cabaret called Compass, where he and May developed and performed most of their skits; his beginnings as a theatre director, collaborating with playwright Neil Simon on such Broadway plays as Barefoot in the park, The odd couple, and Prisoner of Second Avenue, and his direction of motion pictures such as Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf, The graduate, Carnal knowledge, Silkwood, Working girl, and Postcards from the edge. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of these films. A brief question and answer session with Nichols and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
