Summary
This program begins with a recital of Francis Poulenc and Jean Anouilh's Les chemins de l'amour by Dawn Upshaw, lasting several minutes. The bulk of the program comprises a lecture by Opéra national de Paris director Gerard Mortier about the history of opera and music in Paris since the 17th century. Mortier discusses King Louis XIV's founding of Académie royale de musique de Paris under director Jean-Baptiste Lully, and goes on to talk about the intersection of political climate, artistic activity,and audience reception at various points in time, from the ancien régime through the French Revolution, the Napoleonic era, the French Restoration, and up to the latter part of the 19th century, when Palais Garnier was constructed. He discusses the evolution of opera house architecture, the rise of the bourgeois audience, the role of official censorship, and the increasing split between public taste and musical innovation. Recordings of music by Lully, Rameau, Gluck, Mozart, Rossini, Berlioz, Meyerbeer and Offenbach are played to reflect Mortier's talk, which is also illustrated by French paintings.
