  • Part 5, Between Brecht and Beckett: In this program, Richard Eyre examines the work of Bertolt Brecht and Samuel Beckett and the impact they had on other playwrights and on the theater itself, in both Britian and America, particularly through the emergence of Off Off-Broadway theater in the 1960s. Performance footage of their major plays such as Brecht's Mother Courage and her children and Beckett's Waiting for Godot, along with excerpts from other dramatists' works are included. Includes brief interviews with contemporary playwrights and performers Harold Pinter, John McGrath, Peter Brook, David Hare, Tony Kushner, Peter Hall, William Gaskill, Jocelyn Gerbert, John McGrath, Tom Stoppard, August Wilson, Sam Shepard, Edward Albee, Alan Bennett, David Mamet, Edward Bond, Billie Whitelaw, and Caryl Churchill.
  • Part 6, The law of gravity: This episode focuses on the survival of live theater in the late 20th century, with references to various forms of traditional theater and the experimentation of the 1960s and '70s. Emphasis is on the success of such popular musicals as Les miserables, Phantom of the opera, and The Lion King, but also on the lasting influence of the more radical Antonin Artaud on contemporary directors and companies, especially the Living Theatre, Robert Lepage and Peter Brook. Features excerpts from interviews with directors Peter Brook, Julie Taymor, Deborah Warner, and Robert Lepage, and with such theater artists as Simon McBurney, Deborah Warner, Stephen Daldry, Steven Berkoff, Cameron Mackintosh, Harold Prince, Trevor Nunn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mary Ryland, George C. Wolfe, Pinchon Baldinu, and Patrick Marber. Includes performance footage from such works as The street of the crocodiles, Elsinore, Needles and opium, Villa! Villa!, Miss Saigon, Les misérables, The phantom of the opera, The lion king, Marat/Sade, and Angels in America.
