Description
1 videocassette (VHS) (47 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Presenter/director John Barton guides members of the Royal Shakespeare Company in a discussion of Shakespeare's use of language, meter, and verse, with illustrated dramatizations. Barton and the actors address and analyze the question of how to understand Shakespeare's texts, citing examples from his plays, and contrast them with the writings of other British dramatists of the period. Barton encourages the actors to find an effective balance between naturalistic speech and the poetic language of Shakespeare. Examples from Hamlet, Coriolanus, The merchant of Venice, and Othello.
