Summary
Ellen Stewart, founder and artistic director of La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, talks with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Stewart discusses how she created La Mama in New York in 1961 with virtually no financial resources, establishing an environment where American writers and such as Sam Shepard, and Harvey Fierstein, and prominent directors from the international avant-garde found encouragement and a home for their work. Stewart speaks about being subject to frequent raids and arrests during her theater's early days on the grounds that she lacked a license to present entertainment; the acquisition in 1968 of her present headquarters, a dilapidated building on East Fourth St. which she renovated with financial assistance from the Ford Foundation; the "guardian angels," who helped her survive; her arrival in New York City in 1950, and one of her first jobs as an executive in the design department of Saks Fifth Avenue; the vagaries of government funding; and how she has been able to produce such a wide array of theatre on her own terms for over 43 years.
