Description
1 videodisc (DVD) (29 min.) : sd., col. SP; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
Artistic director Martha Lavey and actresses Joan Allen and Lois Smith talk about their roles as women at the otherwise male-dominated Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago, as well as their favorite Steppenwolf productions. Founded in 1976 in a church in Highland Park, Illinois by actors Gary Sinise, Jerry Kinney, and Jeff Perry, Steppenwolf developed a reputation as a macho theater with plays such as True West which featured John Malkovich. Lavey feels that it has since evolved into a more nuanced and varied theater, reflecting the development of its artists and its audience. The guests speak about their experiences joining the company; the Steppenwolf "style"; Steppenwolf's changing reputation in the national theater world; their experience as actors raising children; the demands of being in a play; their hopes for Steppenwolf's future; and the opportunities available to actors in Chicago.
