Description
1 videocassette (Betacam SP) (28 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
Summary
Actor, playwright and screenwriter Harvey Fierstein, star of the Broadway musical Hairspray, talks with co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. Perhaps best known for the play and film Torch song trilogy, which he wrote and starred in, Fierstein's theatrical career began in his teens when he played female roles in drag in such works as Andy Warhol's only stage play, Pork. Fierstein elaborates on the creation of his role as Edna Turnblad, Hairspray's overweight and overprotective mother, which he sought to play "as a woman" opposite Dick Latessa. Fierstein speaks about his 15-year absence from Broadway following his unsuccessful play Safe sex, during which time he worked in film and television, and why working in the theater is most important to him.
