Claudia and Ralph Morgan papers, 1906-1962.
Summary
The Claudia and Ralph Morgan papers contain certificates, contracts, correspondence, scripts, telegrams, and miscellaneous material relating to the individual careers of this father and daughter; both were actors who appeared in motion pictures, radio, or on the stage. Some of these items touch on Ralph Morgan's involvement with professional organizations (e.g. Screen Actors Guild). Of special interest among Claudia Morgan's papers are excerpts from her script for the Moss Hart and George S. Kaufmans play, The Man Who Came to Dinner (i.e. actor's sides, containing only the dialogue for the part of Maggie Cutler, which Morgan took over later in the run). Also of note are two poems written by Ralph to his daughter, numerous letters from Grace Arnold (wife of Ralph, mother of Claudia) to Ralph Morgan, and references to Ralph Morgan's connection to the Screen Actors Guild. Even though Frank Morgan was the uncle and brother of Claudia and Ralph Morgan respectively, there are only a few items that refer to Frank Morgan in the collection. Also, there are no film or stage materials for Ralph Morgan, nor is there any material regarding Claudia Morgan's participation in the Adventures of the Thin Man radio series.
Biography
Actor Ralph Morgan (real name, Raphael Kuhner Wupperman; 1883-1956) played supporting roles in many Hollywood films and was one of the founders and charter members of the Screen Actors Guild. Born in New York City, Morgan earned a law degree from Columbia University, before becoming an actor on stage and in film. In a long film career, Morgan became known for playing the "surprise" killer in several murder mystery films. In addition to acting, Morgan focused on labor relations for actors, serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild (1933 and 1938-1940). Morgan belonged to a family of actors. His brother was the more well known character actor, Frank Morgan. He was married to Grace Arnold, a stage actress; their daughter, Claudia Morgan also became an actress.
Claudia Morgan (real name, Claudeigh Louise Wupperman; 1911-1974) was an actress best known for her work on the Adventures of the Thin Man radio series. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Claudia made her stage debut as a teenager and appeared in nearly two dozen plays on Broadway between 1929 and 1952. She was most active on stage and in radio, making only a few film appearances. One of her films, however, was a lead role in That's My Story (1937), with her father, Ralph Morgan. During the 1940s, Claudia Morgan became nationally known to radio audiences for her portrayal of Nora Charles in the Adventures of the Thin Man radio program (1940-1949).
