Description
1 videocassette (Betacam SP) (28 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
Summary
  • Composer and lyricist Maury Yeston speaks with Theater talk co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins about the current Broadway revival of his 1982 musical Nine. The composer of such musicals as Titanic and Grand Hotel, Yeston based Nine on Federico Fellini's 1963 motion picture 8 1/2. He elaborates on his writing of the score, and the challenges of casting its main character, Guido Contini. The role, taken by Antonio Banderas in the revival, was played by Raul Julia in the original production. Yeston expounds also on his feelings about the current production of Nine directed by David Leveaux in comparison with the original production directed by Tommy Tune, and he speaks about the quality of "completeness," which he feels is essential to a score.
  • Stephen Adly Guirgis discusses his play Our lady of 121st St., which has received acclaim during its Off-Broadway run at the Union Square Theatre. The play concerns a group of people who come together for the funeral of their high school teacher Sister Anne. Guirgis speaks about his structuring of the work as a series of seemingly independent scenes, how director Philip Seymour Hoffman helped shape the play, his approach to character development, and how he feels about being successful as a writer.
