- Description
- 1 videocassette (Betacam SP) (28 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Director Mary Zimmerman and composer Philip Glass speak with Theater talk co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. They discuss their new opera Galileo Galilei, which will open the 2002 Next Wave Festival at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music. Glass and Zimmerman expound on Galileo, a great Italian scientific innovator born 1564 who faced inquisition by the Catholic Church, and why they see the production as relevant. They speak about their conception of the opera, its musical structure, and the growing interest in new operas by the public.
- Also on the program are BAM's president Karen Brooks Hopkins and executive producer Joe Melillo, organizers of the 20th annual Next Wave Festival. They speak about their mission to stage innovative, pioneering works in the performing arts from around the globe. They also address the challenges of raising funds, as well as staging works from abroad, a year after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
