Summary

1. Writer, critic and dramatist John Lahr, editor of the recently published Kenneth Tynan diaries, speaks with Theater talk co-hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. One of the most influential critics of the 20th century, the British Tynan was brilliant and articulate, as well as troubled. Lahr elaborates on Tynan's illegitimacy and upbringing in Birmingham, England, his Oxford education and early theater career, and his groundbreaking criticism, which drew attention to the new plays being produced in post-war Great Britain. Lahr delineates the influence of American media and movies on Tynan, his "obsession" with famous people, his illness and growing isolation, and his association with The New Yorker magazine in his final years as the writer of its theater profiles.
