Description

Summary
This program opens with scene 28 (Making love to a ghost) from the Lincoln Center Festival production of the 55-scene, 20-hour Chinese opera The peony pavilion, written by Tang Xianzu during the Ming Dynasty. Following the scene, production director Chen Shi-Zheng discusses his restoration of the often heavily edited opera's text and music, as well as the recreation of a setting that would represent the circumstances of its original production, and the use of authentic period instruments. He also discusses the Kunqu opera form, and his incorporation of other Chinese theater traditions in the production. Following the discussion, scene 29 (Suspicions) of The peony pavilion is performed.
