Description
  1. 1 videodisc (DVD) (29 min.) : sd., col. SP; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
  1. The multi-faceted author, director, composer Elizabeth Swados, discusses her vision of the theater with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Swados speaks about her efforts to teach drama teachers to create original shows with their students; her sometimes rocky journey as a non-mainstream woman composer; the joy she experiences creating, her love of what she does and her admiration for the people with whom she works, qualties she believes have brought her success as a composer; and her belief that it is possible to steadily create meaningful musical theater without trying to make a fortune. Swados speaks about the creation of her musical Runaways, which addressed the potential of adolescents and how they have been underestimated. The show was produced by Joseph Papp and premiered at his Public Theater in 1977, then moved to Broadway in 1978. It is still performed all over the country. Swados expounds on her upbringing in a middle class Jewish family in Buffalo, where since childhood she desired to be creative and make things with others, her longstanding interest in various musical cultures which influences her own music, and the relevance of "ritual" in her work.
