Summary
Opposites attract is a collaboration between Paul Dresher and Ned Rothenberg, presented as a work in progress in this program. These discs contain two programs recorded on the same day at the Guggenheim Museum. Disc 1 contains an afternoon program featuring Paul Dresher. It begins with a performance of Double ikat; following the performance Dresher speaks about the piece, originally composed for Loose the thread, a ballet choreographed by Brenda Way based on the lives of the Bloomsbury Group. Dresher discusses how Double ikat departs from his usual style; the influence of eastern music and East Asian weaving on the piece; his use of improvisation; and his music for electric guitar. Disc 2 contains a rehearsal for Opposites attract. On the evening program on Disc 3, Dresher and Ned Rothenberg speak about how their collaboration came about and how it reflects their divergent musical backgrounds. Dresher discusses his relationship to California-based minimalist composers; Rothenberg speaks about the various instruments he plays and how he achieves different sonic effects through performance techniques; and about his collaboration with Japanese pianist Yuji Takahashi. Dresher and Rothenberg discuss and demonstrate the tape loop technology used in Opposites attract. A full performance of the work follows, beginning on disc 3 and concluding on disc 4.
