Summary
This program explores how Spain's vibrant music and painting reflect a broad range of European influences. The program centers on Manuel de Falla's Concerto for keyboard and five instruments and examines the way the concerto encapsulates the history of Spanish music. The first segment presents religious music and a recitation of a poem by John of the Cross. Joseph Horowitz and Antonio Molina discuss the Europeanization of Spanish music in the 20th century; the influence of Stravinsky on Falla's late music; connections between Spanish music and visual art; the writings of Federico Garcia Lorca; the centrality of Flamenco in Spanish culture. The second musical segment includes the first performance of Falla's concerto and a series of madrigals. Pianist Pedro Carboné speaks about the construction of the concerto and how it reflects the influence of folk and religious music, and performs three piano sonatas. A second performance of Falla's concerto concludes the program.
