Summary
Dance Theatre of Harlem performs excerpts from works choreographed by DTH choreographers. The performances are interspersed with panel discussions moderated by Zita Allen. Panelists include Arthur Mitchell, founder and artistic director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem; choreographer Robert Garland; choreographer Endalyn Taylor; and choreographer Keith Saunders. Robert Garland discusses the process of creating the choreography for Castor and Pollux, including the inspiration provided by Marie Laveau, a voodoo priestess from the 1800's; his relationship with Arthur Mitchell; and how he utlilizes different styles in his choreography. Endalyn Taylor discusses the process of creating choreography for her first choreographic work, The ugly duckling, and her personal experience with Dance Theatre of Harlem. Both choreographers discuss how they go about choosing dancers. Arthur Mitchell describes DTH's long history of community outreach and how it nurtures dramatic qualities to create "dance theater" rather than simply ballet. Choreographer Keith Saunders, who joined the company in 1975 as an apprentice dancer, joins the panel to talk about his work Sweetheart of all my dreams; his role as ballet master at DTH; his role as director of the Dancing Through Barriers program, from which the dancers for these performances were chosen; and his journey to choreography. Arthur Mitchell then briefly describes the company's current status and his hope for the future.
